Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these medications must be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
