"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: The author likewise wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple famous fans have publicly coveted the role.

One thing is obvious something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos often depict them walking in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such pure exuberance you inevitably think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire young girls to make music."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the fourth member of Haim."

Historic Milestone

The group are speaking from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The project came out of a phase of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words track departures and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That newfound confidence demanded a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The trio's openness inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal tales.

One man ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global audience.

But the band will consistently be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
