The McLaren driver narrowly beat fellow driver and title rival the Australian for the quickest lap in the final moments of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who grabbed the points lead from Piastri by just one point after taking the win in Mexico City recently, beat the Australian by a mere 0.023s. Until that point, Piastri had been the leading McLaren for most of the session before the sprint shootout due at 6:30 PM GMT. Max Verstappen, the other racer in the points battle, sitting with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, was classified in 17th place as his Red Bull team followed a unique setup. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to have an incident, if briefly, when he spun at Turn Four early in the session. Tsunoda slid over the curbs on exit before spinning across the gravel trap, and was lucky to avoid just a slight brush of the fence. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the final moments of the practice, rotating twice through the fast downhill Mergulho turn approaching the last turn on to the start-finish straight. The veteran ended the session in 19th, one place behind teammate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren pair were significantly quicker of the remaining drivers, with the German's Sauber in third, 0.619secs off Piastri's best. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
